Aspen Blues Recess 2012
August 28th through the 30th
Aspen, Carbondale, and Paonia, Colorado
Registration will open in spring of 2012, but for now save the date!!! We will be joining forces with Off The Grid Blues at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage the week before in Northeastern, MO, Check out their website at Off The Grid Blues 2012 and get excited! For those of us doing both events we will have a number of "Recess Family Road Tripper" cars taking five days to road-trip the 1,000 miles from OTGB to ABR with proposed dancing and housing spots in Lawrence, KS, Denver, Estes Park (Rocky Mountain National Park), and Carbondale, CO.
Three days of Fusion Blues dancing, hot springing, camping, hiking, and more dancing in some of the most beautiful and rugged mountains in the country! ABR was the first of a unique new series of national blues fusion exchanges that focus on building dancer community and solidarity, love for the nature and the outdoors, and unrestrained self-expression through fusion music. Aspen Blues Recess is unique because the event itself is your host, with every dancer living, exploring, and dancing together in the same place all weekend. Because of the event's unique nature registration will cap out at 100 dancers, so check back this Spring when registration opens up to reserve your spot for ABR 2010!
Bring camping gear and bedding, as Saturday and Sunday nights we'll be camping and Firday night we'll be squatting at Elsewhere Studios in Paonia. If you are not the camping type and still want to come, feel free to check out any of the nearby hotels for Friday and Sunday nights. Showers will be available in the Crystal River, Elsewhere Studios, or at the Carbondale Community Recreation Center. If you need to be convinced, check out PHOTOS from the area.
The event will cap out at 100 attendees. Join the Aspen Blues Recess Facebook event page to get updates about when registration plans to open.

Yes, you heard it right, the plan is to camp Saturday and Sunday nights! If you do not have or are not bringing minimal camping gear (sleeping bag and ground pad) be sure to note this during your online registration and we will make sure extra gear is available for you. If you are driving and have a tent, please bring it. If you are not the camping type and don't want to even attempt it, there are many hotels in the Valley. Friday night events will be most easily accessible from Paonia, Saturday in Carbondale and Sunday night will be in Aspen, CO.
Denver (DEN) is the most economical option and is a beautiful 3 hour drive away. Adin Van Duyne will be organizing car-pooling to and from the Denver Airport. Round Trip flights to Denver from Austin, TX, ($159), Portland, OR, ($175), Kansas City ($139), and Seattle ($175) according to Kayak.com. If you plan to fly into Denver and not rent your own car, be sure to email Adin (shlepsi@gmail.com) about what times cars will be going to and from the Denver airport so you are sure to have a ride. The more direct but also more expensive option is to fly directly into Aspen (ASE). Round trip flights into Aspen cost roughly $150 more than those into Denver. Aspen's airport allows for easy public bus access or easy dancer airport runs. A good option for those who want to be back for work on Monday or Friday is to fly into Denver and out of Aspen, or visa versa.
Important Maps: In the order of importance
This is not a money-making, capitalist venture: if you do not think that you can afford the registration fee or you could afford it but you have decided against coming because you just don't want to pay it, email bluesrecess@gmail.com and we will work it out, whether it is work/trade, a scholarship ticket, or a lifetime of indentured servitude, we'll work it so you can make it to the event. Just ask, because we want to dance with you!
Refunds: Yeah, so what is it with this whole no-refund policy going around events these days? Or only a refund for credit, what? We don't want to penalize anyone for wanting to come to the recess, especially if it ends up that you aren't able to join us (I mean that is punishment enough, right?). So our refund policy is that we give them and in full, but only up until three weeks before the event so that we have more than enough time to find a replacement body. Any refund requests within three weeks of the event are not guaranteed and will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
All-you-can-eat Sushi: At the Friday late night dance we will have the option of all-you-can-eat sushi being rolled at the Elsewhere Studio bar by local sushi-chef Jimmy Dread. Sushi is completely optional and will cost $20/person, paid online when you register. Elsewhere Studios is in downtown Paonia where there are many local dinner alternatives.
